- CD-ROM XA has just been announced last month, by Philips, SONY and Microsoft.
- It is considered to be a bridge between CD-ROM and CD-I, allowing CD-ROM to use
- ADPCM audio. New Papyrus is a kind of classic and XA is too new any way to
- find in printed references except press release. The details for XA should be
- published by early 1989, I think. I have no evidence but I feel it will be
- the sysnthesis of earlier standards to be _the_ standard of CD media.
- As a producer of CD media, I am very interested in the possibilities that
- one CD disc can be played back on CD-I player and CD-ROM drives (CD-ROM XA
- standard).

- The only English reference I have on CD-ROM is the New Papyrus from
- Microsoft Press and it contains a brief explanation on error corrections.
- But there should be some technical books in U.S. since I have a lot of
- books here in Japan.(In Japanese)
- But in order to know the minutes of the specifications, you had better be
- a licensee for the Yellow Book, I think.

- Steve,
- My understanding of the cd-rom XA is that there are three ways to afford
- access to it. First is to get a new drive with the processor built in, second
- is to add on a board in the current pc with the processor and thirdly a unit
- that interfaces between the current cdrom drive and the computer will be
- available with the chip to process the XA architecture. The latter two will
- still allow the xa architecture to function with the drives that are on the
- market today, so hopefully the announcement will not deter people from
- purchasing the drives that are on the market today, since they WILL still be
- able to use the xa architecture. I think this information is correct but if
- anyone more technically inclined cares to expound or correct please press on.
- ps--don't have any idea how these gizmos are going to be priced.

- The more I try to produce a good title for CD-I, it is very difficult to use
- its full functions. Once I thought we don't have to use all its functions,
- but they are the advantages of CD-I and we have to do our best to use them.
- Obviously, we need a good authoring system. I know there are some software
- houses who has been developing CD-I authoring tools in U.S. but I don't have
- any detailed info. Also, the term "authoring" seem to differ; sometimes they
- only mean the encoding tools, others will consider the ultimate production
- systems which includes image capturing, storyboarding, simulating, encoding,
- premastering, mastering....
-
- Who has the best authoring system now? How much is it? Does anybody know?
- Thanks in advance.

- [B f 14 type Welcome to CD-ROM!
-
- To answer some of your questions -- 1) There are differences in the individual
- drives available today. Most involve the access speeds. There was a review of
- drive performance specifications in the September issue of CD-ROM Review.
- Check it out. 2) If the drive is meant to be directly connected to an option
- slot in the PC bus it will typically come with the controller card. If it is a
- SCSI drive then it typically does not come with the controller card. 3) Access
- to ta specific CD-ROM disc is dependent upon the logical format in use by the
- dev developer. If it is a High Sierra or ISO9660 disc then Microsoft
- Extensions coupled with the specific hardware device driver will work. If the
- developer is using a proprietary format, they will have to supply you with the
- software to access the disc. Most hardware manufacturers are supplying
- Microsoft Extensions with the drive, but you check it out when you purchase the
- hardware. If you need to purchase the Extensions seperately from the hardware
- Discovery Systems sells the V2.0 version from $25.00 plus $3.00 shipping anf
- Handling. 4)The availability of a retrieval engine with a CD-ROM disc depends
- on the application on the disc. Most discs containing databases come with some
- type of search software.
-
- Good luck with your CD-ROM projects.

- Thanks for the info. Dictionaries and database type CD-ROMs should come
- to the market sooner or later since there's need for such products. However,
